Outstanding Community Service Hero Recognized
Liz Zenonian Waud, Executive Director of Operation Uplift was recognized as an Outstanding Community Service Hero at the 25th annual community service awards luncheon held on April 8, 2005 and hosted by John Brewer, PDN Editor and Publisher, and the Soroptimist International of Port Angeles noon club.

The Community Service Award honors the "dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments of community leaders and volunteers who have made a difference in Clallam County, who have made our communities a better place by doing extraordinary things for their neighbors, their community or the environment."

"The honorees are role models for all of us, not only because they've aspired and dreamed - but because our local heroes' achievements are within our own reach."

Liz Zenonian-Waud has been the co-director of Operation Uplift, a support group for cancer survivors since 1990.  She has applied for and repeatedly received a Susan G. Komen Foundation grant to support the North Olympic Peninsula Outreach Project for Women Cancer Survivors.  Liz has organized the local program which is an opportunity for women to get out into the world to do things they had never thought of doing - like biking, kayaking and river rafting, horseback trips, yoga, hanging basket workshops, hiking and fitness classes.

Liz was a tireless leader of the Valley Creek Estuary project for the Soroptimist noon club.  She helped organize the project, securing participation by the Port of Port Angeles, the City of Port Angeles and the K-Ply Mill.  She applied for and received various grants to help fund the project and participated in and lead other innovative fundraisers until the project was completed.

The Susan G. Komen For the Cure, Puget Sound Affiliate, has awarded Operation Uplift a grant to fund the 2007 North Olympic Peninsula Outreach Project for women cancer survivors.  The grant provides provides retreats and outdoor activities for all women cancer survivors and exercise classes and outreach opportunities to women on the Peninsula who are underserved medically and cannot afford breast cancer screenings and follow-up care.  The 2007 Calendar of Events is shown below.

Soroptimist International of  Port Angeles - Noon Club has selected Operation Uplift as their "project" for their 2007 Golf Tournament on June 16, 2007  A dinner and auction will precede the tourny on June 15th.  Funds from SIPA money-making projects may be used to support operation costs for Operation Uplift.
